The Challenge
This project began with a home situated in a high rise building, where the owner intended to convert the space into a fully functional homestay. However, the journey wasn’t without its hurdles. The previous contractor was unable to provide a design solution that met the owner’s vision and needs. On top of that, the client wanted to retain most of the existing furniture, which posed a challenge in ensuring the new design could seamlessly integrate with what was already there. Another key issue was the lack of adequate storage throughout the unit, making the space feel cluttered and impractical especially for a homestay setup that requires efficient space usage.
Our Solution
To bring the client’s vision to life, we proposed a design rooted in the Japandi style, a fusion of Japanese simplicity and Scandinavian functionality. This approach allowed us to create a serene, well organised space with a natural and timeless appeal. We suggested smaller scale furniture pieces that matched the proportions of the room, making it feel open and airy despite its limited square footage.
We chose a palette of bright earth tones complemented by warm lighting to enhance the sense of space and lightness, while avoiding any heavy or dark elements. Since we were working with only the showroom measurements, every piece was carefully planned to ensure it would fit well once the keys were handed over.
Most importantly, we curated only the essential furniture items, prioritising function and flow over excess. The result? A cozy, uncluttered sanctuary that reflects Japanese elegance with a modern, practical twist, just as the client envisioned.
